It's like the stores here no longer give out free plastic bags, postensibly to 'help the environment'...ignoring the fact that EVERYTHING they sell is packaged in plastic. But they sure as hell are willing to sell you heavy-duty shopping bags...

they can make more money selling it separately. simple as that. no headphone jack and no headphones = airpods and galaxy buds = more money. it's all about the money, honey.

It's not for the environment, it's to keep the price lower(or not, like Apple) and then sell you the accessory aside, usually overpriced. Headphones, charger who knows maybe in 10 years the display will come separately.

One thing you didn't touch on is how much packaging they're actually saving. At first blush, cutting the size in half looks like it should cut the packaging in half. But that isn't the case. I don't know the dimensions of the packaging, but let's assume a cube. Cutting the height in half does not reduce the surface area by half; it reduces it by 1/3. (50% per side for four of the sides, out of a total of six sides) And a cube is about as good as that ratio gets. My guess is, with those form factors, that's probably a 20% reduction in material. Once you consider the internal packaging, we might be looking at about 10-15% reduction. So that "win" from reducing the packaging turns into a loss even faster!

At the same time coding laptops and I phone parts with serials so that repairs are not possible as recently proven when someone tried to swap original parts and it was loked... Shout-out to Motorola, the Moto One Hyper I bought in mid-2020 included a charger, cable (useful, it was my first USB-C device), headphones - and the phone also included the 3.5mm jack socket.

An addition "stinging" point would be that the price of the new phones without headphones and bricks are as expansive as the ones WITH it. So you pay more for less. Good points on the wireless charging. Didnt know it was so much worse. Really thought it would solve the different cables problem.

They could jjust make version with charger and version without charger. Same box. One just empty space. If I already had charger I would buy version without. If not, or I had old charger, I buy version with charger. They would still avoid shipping charger for those who don't need it, and keep packaging small and efficient for those who need it.

The phone is an incomplete product without the charger. This should be challenged legally as it’s like buying a car that does not have a way to fill the gas tank. This is purely a money grab and making any other argument is stupid.

I think you've got a couple things wrong. All the arguments about packaging assume people are buying a charger everytime you they get a phone (and via postage). But many people have chargers already when they upgrade and many pickup their phones from stores. But also its not true that you need to continuously upgrade your charger with the phone for drastically improved charging speeds each time. People think this because of the abundance of cheap, slow chargers shipped with phones. But a decent quality high wattage charger will last years, I still use one that 5+ years old. Power delivery is more rooted in the principles of wattage and current and there just isn't regular big breakthroughs like every 2 years. So what you mention about avoiding wireless charging and having a good quality charger is the best bet (in which case, they manufacturer shouldn't include one in the box, get a good one and keep it) as it is most efficient and you'll get the longest lifetime out of the battery before it dies. And its the battery being manufactured and disposed of which is the biggest ecological impact by far (waaaay more than packaging).

Lets face it.. the big telco companies sell you a phone that is about $100 in parts then make you think you're getting a bargain while silently taking more away, Just look at the Big Mac.

That's why i have a 2016 phone

One thing that kept popping up on my Facebook feed is the Fairphone 3+. In my opinion it's a bad spec phone and certainly doesn't warrant the price tag nor do i think it's as good for the planet as they claim. The 3+ costs £400, has an old Snapdragon 632(4x1.8ghz+4x1.8Ghz), 4GB ram and 64GB storage, surely with specs like these, the phone will end up insufferably slow pretty quickly and people won't be able to upgrade it and would have to buy a new phone. Now, their main selling point for this phone is that with it being upgradeable, it's better for the environment, instead of replacing the entire device, you can upgrade it but only the camera modules(the 3+ already has the best available camera so not that upgradeable at all...) What are your thoughts on this? Bad business model? Trying to make money from the eco conscious? The reason i ask is that your video is about companies not including cables, chargers and earphones, the Fairphone 3+ includes nothing but the box, a mini screwdriver and the handset itself. I'll also add that their store sells the power brick for £18, cable for £18 and the "modular earphones" for £10 separately... Oh and also a case for £35 and screen protector for £30. That's around £510 for the phone with all the accessories. Not a very "fairphone" if you ask me and people would get a much better phone if they spent sub £200 on something like a Cubot x30 Pro.

Bottom line is profits. When they say they're being greener, it's not about doing their part for climate change. They just reduced their unit cost. It's always about the money.

So what can we do to help with the madness? I like the info you give but i want to do something with it other wise the info is for nothing. Why does someone need a new phone every year? I grew up with the same phone, tv and stereo. We even had shoe repair shops. Now we throw everything away just to buy a new one. How can i help?

The biggest problem with these items is none of them can be easily repaired and are essentially designed to be disposable no matter how much they cost. But not including the necessary accessories is just a con, it is a hook to get you buying more insanely expensive crap from these companies.
